Splice marks occur at scene transitions. As the name
suggests, they are inherent in the original film negative. They are more
commonly seen in 2.35:1 movies, usually at the bottom of the frame. Many
2.35:1 movies are now matted theatrically at 2.40:1 in an attempt to hide
splice marks.
