" If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had legs, I could run away. If I had a voice, I could talk and be some kind of company for myself. I could yell for help, but nobody would help me." Timothy Bottoms (The Last Picture Show) is Joe Bonham, a gentle American doughboy who becomes a basketcase as the result of a bomb explosion. Confined to a hospital bed - and with no arms, legs, face, voice or ears - Joe is unable to distinguish if he is awake or dreaming (his strange and crazy dreams include an encounter with Donald Sutherland as Christ!). Eventually he communicates through thought and asks to be placed in a freakshow so people can see what WWI has done to him. Made famous to a new generation of MTV and heavy metal addicts by its inclusion in Metallica's "One" music video, Dalton Trumbo's "JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN" is quite simply the Holy Grail of hard to find 70's counterculture anti-war movies.
