Meryl Streep (The Hours, Adaptation) gives one of the greatest performances of her career as Susan Traherne, an idealistic young English woman haunted by the memory of her passionate liaison with a young spy (Sam Neill - The Dish) in occupied France. Over the next 20 years in post-war Britain, Susan's disillusionment and emotional stability creates chaos in the lives of those around her, including her long-suffering diplomat husband (Charles Dance - Gosford Park), her trusted best friend (Tracey Ullman - Small Time Crooks) and her angry young lover (Sting). Even though the glory of the 'good war' is ended, Susan's destructive struggle with a life of plenty had only just begun.Sir John Gielgud (Elizabeth, Shine) and Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) co-star in this provocative drama written by award-winning director, playwright David Hare (Strapless) and masterfully directed by Fred Schepisi (Last Orders, Fierce Creatures).
