The aircraft carriers during World War 2 provided the backdrop for a new form of warfare, a war where the opposing fleets were so powerfully armed that naval battles were fought without ever coming into visual contact with each other. Ironically, Germany was one of the only nations involved in this conflict not to operate carriers; and had the German navy operations included such potent vessels, the war in the Atlantic and Mediterranean could possibly have taken a different turn. This programme looks at the great carrier fleets of the second world war; British, American and Japanese, the different strategies and compares the methods used and development of this relatively new weapon.
