They were the brutal band of thugs who civilised a nation, conquered a kingdom and uncovered a continent. They were at once the most civilised of statesmen, the most fearless and skilled of warriors and the most gallant and accomplished of explorers. Theirs is a saga of epic proportions. They were the pioneers of the New World and the trailblazers of our modern society.

Program 1 ~ The Invaders
Viking incursions along the Atlantic seaboard had been the scourge of the Frankish Kingdom for centuries. In 911 the Viking warriors were tethered to King Charles the Simple through the bonds of feudalism. The lawless bandits who peopled the newly created Duchy of Normandy embraced the French legal system and its hierarchical feudal institutions. By 940, the Old Norse language was dead, and though they remained proud of their swashbuckling, free spirited, blood thirsty forefathers, they bore them little resemblance. They had developed into a very distinct Norman Dynasty of ruthless ambition, rivalry, and war between brothers and cousins.

Program 2 ~ The Kingdom in the Sun
Edward the Confessor's reign in England has been considered the "Norman Prelude". Upon his death in January 1066, the question of succession remained unresolved. Cross Channel claims for the throne brought the Anglo-Saxon and Norman dynasties head to head. Within months, William the Conqueror was crowned "as God and the Saints were witnesses". The Norman Prelude had given way to the Norman Era - it would last for two centuries.

Program 3 ~ Loss of Identity
By the beginning of the 11th Century, the Normans had virtually completed the process by which they had transformed themselves from a coalition of illiterate heathen barbarians into a civilised Christian State. In southern Italy the Normans found a great market for their mercenary abilities and by 1022 they had perfected the art of being on the winning side. By 1066 Robert Guiscard had become a dominant power in Southern Italy and the reign of his nephew Roger II found a successful and thriving kingdom. The Kingdom in the Sun represented the bridge between north and south, east and west, and the Teuton, Christian and Muslim worlds, and boasted a flourishing culture that combined Byzantine, Arabic and Western elements to become the most prosperous and strongly centralised state in the Mediterranean world.
