A sizzling screen version of George Bizet's Carmen updated for an all-black cast, including stunning screen goddess Dorothy Dandridge, and legendary crooner Harry Belafonte in one of his most memorable film roles. Oscar Hammerstein provides lyrics for Bizet's melodies, legendary auteur Otto Preminger (Laura, Anatomy of Murder) adds the stunning direction, while the revolutionary black cast is a virtual almanac of great African-American actors, singers and dancers of the mid twentieth century. Set in the Second World War-era American South, soldier Belafonte falls for Carmen (Dandridge), a seductive factory worker. The lovers flee after the soldier kills his sergeant, however Carmen's hurtful infidelity soon drives her lover to a crime of passion.
