Klaus Kinski, in his final collaboration with director Werner Herzog, stars as Cobra Verde, the barefoot South American bandit and slave trader who aspires to be King in his newly adopted African homeland. Adapted from the Bruce Chatwin novel, The Viceroy of Ouidah, and beautifully photographed on location in Africa and Columbia, Cobra Verde is the story of Manoel da Silva, a lone, fearsome Brazilian outlaw who leaves his parched and dying homeland to take a job as a sugar plantation overseer. But when the incorrigible 'green snake' impregnates the daughters of the plantation owner, he is sent to the West African coast on a mission to reopen the slave trade with the treacherous King of Dahomey - and to face certain death. The merciless Da Silva takes on his new role with sadistic relish, however, and plots a stunning revolt against the intractable King.
