Luchino Visconti's (Rocco and his Brothers, The Leopard) final film, released two months after his death, is a stunning conclusion to an epic career, a sumptuous adaptation of Gabriele d'Annunzio's 1892 novel portraying the decadence of the aristocracy in late 19th-century Italy.

Tullio (Giancarlo Giannini), a debauched aristocratic libertine, indulges in a series of affairs and finally leaves his wife for his sensual mistress, the manipulative Jennifer O'Neill. Faced, however, with the wrath of his mistresses' cuckolded husband, Tullio tries to return to his wife only to learn that she's begun a passionate tryst with a young writer, Filippo. Recreating a world of lush extravagance, Visconti masterfully conveys the pathos of a society bonded by family tradition and honour, but torn apart by shallow self-indulgence.
