Agatha Christie's Poirot is entangled in a murderous web of wealth, deceit and dubious intentions.At Richard Abernethie's funeral his youngest sister, Cora, announces that he was murdered. The day after, Cora herself is murdered, hacked to death by a hatchet while she slept in her bed. The family solicitor Entwhistle asks Poirot to investigate. On visiting the family home, Enderby Hall, Poirot soon discovers that all the family are lying about their alibis.
