The powerful and triumphant story of a woman's stand against the tribal practices in Burkina Faso. Important, relevant and profoundly moving, MOOLAADE is a film that will not easily be forgotten. Set in a small African village, four young girls facing ritual purification flee to the household of Colle Ardo Sy, a strong-willed woman who managed to shield her own teenage daughter from this purification. Colle invokes the time-honoured custom of moolaade (santuary) to protect the fugitives, and tension mounts as the ensuing stand-off pits Colle against village traditionalists (both male and female) and endangers the prospective marriage of her daughter to the heir-apparent to the tribal throne. Directed by Ousmane Sembene, one of the founding fathers of African cinema, MOOLAADE is a rich warm and powerful film.
