Andy Garcia brings to life artist Amadeo Modigliani's story of tragic love, rivalry and excess in the golden age of modern art, when greats like Pablo Picasso, Diego Rivera, Jean Cocteau and Gertrude Stein held court in the salons of post-World War One Paris. Modigliani's passionate life is also an existence filled struggle - fuelled by drugs and alcohol, he walks the fine line between genius and insanity. Having fathered a child with a beautiful Catholic girl, Jeanne, whose love he spurned, he is reckless and tormented, faced with derision and bigotry. Professionally, he battles for recognition with none other than Pablo Picasso. Desperate for some form of respectability, he enters Paris' annual art competition, goading his arch rival to do the same. Neither having entered the competition before, and with both their futures at stake, the artists take refuge before their canvasses, each of their destinies hanging in the balance.
