From landmark French director Alain Resnais (Hiroshima Mon Amour, Night and Fog), My American Uncle recounts the 'case histories' of three tangled lives. Using the narrative observations of real-life human behavioural theorist, Henry Laborit, the film describes the complex motivations of a group of characters including Rene (a young Gerard Depardieu), a working-class manager in a textile factory who is demoted and has to move away from his wife and young child and Janine (Nicole Garcia), an actress having an affair with a married writer and radio boss Jean (Roger Pierre). Resnais' unique narrative style is evident as we revisit these characters' childhoods through photographs, and then discover their motivations, their affairs, marriages, sufferings, successes and failures until their separate lives collide. One of his Resnais' most acclaimed films, it gained an Oscar® nomination for Best Screenplay in 1981 and won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
