The award-winning 1956 film directed by Satyajit Ray after Pather Panchali, the second part of his legendary Apu Trilogy. Focusing on the life of Apu from childhood to college, this milestone coming-of-age saga won eleven international awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

Harihar takes his wife Sarbojaya and son, Apu, to live in the bustling city of Benares after the tragic death of his daughter, Durga. Harihar struggles to make a living reading sacred texts by the shores of the Ganges River. But when he falls ill, Sarbajaya must learn to cope on her own. Apu, by now an adolescent, and extremely bright and hungry for knowledge, and is able to attend school, and eventually university. Sarbajaya is reluctant to let her son go, and grows weak from illness. Apu must choose between the city, and his studies, or returning to his mother's side.
