A film by Max Ophuls Based on Arthur Schnitzler's scandalous 1900 play Reigen , Max Ophuls' La Ronde is an irresistibly sly take on the vicissitudes of love and romance. Set in a Viennese winter during the last years of the Hapsburgs, La Ronde charts the sexes and classes through their illicit liaisons, and its exuberant cinematic flourishes are regarded among Ophuls' stylistic triumphs. A mysterious Master of Ceremonies acts as our guide on this romantic carousel, opening with a fleeting encounter between a lonely prostitute and a returning soldier. Our soldier then returns to his sweetheart, a chambermaid. But soon she too progresses through the romantic roundelay, escorted by her employer's son... And so the lusty carousel turns again, and we waltz along with the lovers as they change partners and dance again, and again, and again.
