This adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula is one of the lost gems of the 1970s. Jack Palance’s portrayal of Dracula taps into the original Stoker characterisation of Dracula’s preference for romance over bloodlust, the pathos of this character only ever matched by Gary Oldman in Coppola’s 1992 version. Palance’s silent and deadly movement in the film is reminiscent of Murnau’s Nosferatu. Expertly supported by Nigel Davenport as Van Helsing and Simon Ward as Arthur Holmwood, this production relies on excellent acting and screenplay rather than big budget special effects. The screenplay by Richard Matheson (The Night Stalker, The Omega Man) and tight direction by the Master of TV horror Dan Curtis (House of Dark Shadows, Trilogy of Terror) make this production “fresh, realistic… designed to chill” —Variety.
