Officially recognised as the first major science-fiction film produced by Hollywood, Destination Moon won the 1950 Academy Award for Best Special Effects. The suspenseful plot revolves around a team of Americans determined to land on the moon, convinced that whoever controls the moon also controls the Earth. As the atomic powered rocket Luna is constructed in the Mojave Desert, insidious, foreign-created propaganda turns the public opinion against them. Sensing that the launch will be halted, four of the men decide to make a hasty pre-dawn lift-off in the untested rocket: DESTINATION MOON!
The stunning level of realism and attention to detail is remarkable considering this was created more than 10 years before the U.S. launched its first satellite and almost 20 years before man walked on the moon.
