President Ulysses S. Grant dispatches famed indian fighter Johnny MacKay (Alan Ladd) to negotiate a treaty with the troublesome Modocs of Northern California and Southern Oregon. While traveling, MacKay's stagecoach is ambushed by the renegade Modoc Chief, Captain Jack (Charles Bronson) and only he and fellow traveler Nancy Meek (Audrey Dalton) survive. Discovering that Captain Jack is responsible for many atrocities in the area and is in violent opposition to the peace treaty, MacKay is forced to fight him one-on-one, using guns, knives and fists in a dramatic showdown.
