Sex, love, adultery and betrayal are just some of the themes explored in The Golden Bowl, a film that looks at two romantic couples - both before and after an act of adultery takes place.Featuring an all-star cast including Uma Thurman, Kate Beckinsale, Anjelica Huston and Nick Nolte, The Golden Bowl is a story of two marriages entangled in a complex, almost incestuous relationship. Maggie (Beckinsale), the daughter of the long widowed American Tycoon Adam Verver (Nolte) marries the charming although impoverished Italian aristocrat Prince Amerigo (Northam). Through a twist of fate Maggie's father marries Amerigo's ex-lover Charlotte (Thurman). Maggie's suspicion of an affair between the ex-lovers grows after the ill-fated purchase of a golden bowl. It becomes only a matter of time before Maggie unravels the truth from the deception and lies. Set in England and Italy between 1903 and 1909, The Golden Bowl offers a rich portrait of the cruel games that lovers play and a society in which language is as brutal a weapon as any blade.
