Back in the early '80's, pop music was obsessed with the new-new wave to be exact. The last thing that most recording artists wanted to do at that point was to reach back into the past. With this in mind, Linda Ronstadt's decision to record an album of jazz-standards seemed like a career u-turn of radical proportions. Going against the prevailing 'wave', she released 'What's New' in 1983, an album as different from the hard edged, synthesizer driven pop fare of the era as could be imagined.
