However in a botched effort to steal the snakes, terrorists destroy the lab and the rattlesnakes escape into the wild, eventually making their way to the remote town of Santa Mira. After just one snake bite from an infected rattler, the virus begins killing the locals and fear spreads throughout the entire community. When the news reaches military officials, a plan is exacted to cover up the incriminating source of the virus. Under the pretence that it will prevent the virus reaching epidemic proportions, the military devises a calculated strategy: take control of the town, quarantine the area - then bomb it out of existence.
