Story of O, The: Special Widesceen Edition (Histoire d'O) (remastered)R2UK

Keeping to just the English reviews that I can read and understand (as opposed to English reviews that I can't understand :-)), there are releases from Region 1 and Region 2 (UK) to be considered. The Region 1 release has the following features:

  • Partial audio commentary from Just Jaeckin
  • Biographies of Cast and Crew
  • Colour still gallery
  • Theatrical Trailer

It has three language options (English, French and Spanish) but the widescreen transfer is not 16x9 enhanced.

The Region 2 (UK) release seems to offer similar style video and audio transfers as the Region 4 but offers two additional extras:

  • Two deleted scenes
  • Interview with Just Jaeckin

The Region 2 (French) release offers not only the full length version of the film, but the following:

  • 1.66:1 Widescreen presentation not 16x9 enhanced
  • French Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack
  • English, French and Portuguse subtitles
  • Featurette - tour of an Erotica Museum
  • Featurette - Il etait une fois les maisons closes (a look at prostitution and erotica in history)
  • Theatrical Trailer

Depending upon your point of view, any would offer a better option to the Region 4 release. Since 16x9 enhancement should be essential for widescreen releases, the nod would be given to the Region 2 (UK) release but the Region 2 (French) offers the original theatrical release along with the original theatrical ratio as well as some interesting sounding extras. The French release has been described to me by a fellow reviewer who owns the DVD as having the better transfer, better shadow detail, crisper, but still soft and rather poor. The Region 2 (French) release is the best option all things considered at the present time. All up it sounds as if we are still awaiting a definitive version of the film on DVD however.
