Battlestar Galactica-Complete Series: Collector's EditionR1
I ain't happy, folks. We've been robbed...again. While the episode content available on this set is the same as that afforded our friends in Region 1, we miss out on several important and interesting extras. While this might be explained away because of the different disc style used in Region 1 compared to our set here (the Region 1 set uses a mix of layers per disc), ours could have easily have held the extras that we miss out on.

The Region 4 version of this set misses out on:

  • Audio Commentary for the pilot episode. With Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict and Herb Jefferson Jr.
  • Approx. 1 hour of deleted scenes for the episodes Lost Planet of the Gods, The Lost Warrior, The Long Patrol, The Young Lords, The Man with Nine Lives, Murder on the Rising Star and Experiment in Terra (to be confirmed).
  • Composing the Score featurette
  • Video game preview trailer
  • 6 Chapter stops per episode
  • Animated menus with audio
  • French and Spanish subtitles
  • Episode guide collector's book (I only received the test discs for review, so the Region 4 retail packaging could include this, but I have no indication of this.)
  • Cylon head packaging (Available in Australia through ezydvd.com.au as a limited 3000 units only exclusive)
The Region 1 version of this set misses out on:
  • Nothing
When you see the balance so far in favour of the Region 1 set, why would you consider the Region 4 set? And this also applies to the Region 2 U.K. version, which is the same as we have here in Region 4. We're not talking about a couple of trailers and a subtitle or two, but major and quite important extras that Universal have seen fit not to give us. I would have much preferred that we got an NTSC version of the set straight from the U.S. with the region code changed in the mastering process. This has been done several times elsewhere, but what we get here is such a disappointment. The loss of the commentary track is the worst of all, as it is reported to be quite good and something that a fan of this show would want. It's with much regret that I must recommend the Region 1 version over ours in Region 4 (and the U.K.'s in Region 2). This means that I'll have to go out and buy this series from the U.S. as we miss out on too much. Not happy, Universal.
