This story of the grim, ritualistic decline and fall of a respectable college professor at the hand of a scheming vamp must be one of the most horrific studies of human degradation ever portrayed on film. After spotting some of his students passing round sexy photographs of Lola-Lola (Marlene Dietrich), a cabaret singer at the Blue Angel nightclub, Professor Rath (Emil Jannings) goes to the club and is caught up in the wild atmosphere. Transfixed by the high-heeled Lola-Lola in stockings and garter belt, he falls under her hypnotic spell. The film catapaulted Marlene Dietrich to overnight international stardom from the moment she straddled a chair in Berlin's Blue Angel nightclub and low-moaned the now immortal "Falling In Love Again". As sultry vamp Lola-Lola, she was aloof, a cold beauty, the epitome of a mystical woman capable of enslaving the passions of any man. Her co-star Emil Jennings, whose thick German accent had stopped his successful transition from silent films in Hollywood considered himself the leading actor, but was told "The success of this film will be found in the naked thighs of Miss Dietrich'. The film was shot in both German and English. This is the subtitled version that was most popular on first release - and remains so today.
