Huff-Complete First Season (2004)

The story of a psychiatrist slowly losing his mind. Doesn't sound like an award winning series, does it? But this show is richly textured, wonderfully detailed, simultaneously heart-warming and heartbreaking, very real in all of its surrealism, and truly amazing – I cannot recommend it highly enough. Fans of Nip/Tuck should definitely check this out.

Planet Earth-Episodes 1-5 (2006)
BBC
Cover Art
Planet Earth is a must-have on DVD. A flawlessly filmed and researched nature programme the DVD includes the first 5 episodes of the 11 part series. It is presented in demonstration quality and would be a pinnacle of home theatre presentation were it not for the fact that the image quality of the standard definition DVD can't compete with the High Definition broadcast of the program on TV earlier this year. Even if you are only a casual nature film lover this is still a worthy purchase. For anyone else - you should have bought it already!

Those who thought this show would die with Season 8 are strongly encouraged to seek out a copy of this. While certainly not groundbreaking TV, it is true first class entertainment, with the kind of production values that makes burning lamp time on your projector well worth the money. Fantastic transfer, and an excellent set worth buying.

V for Vendetta (2005)
?
Cover Art
Is it possible in this post 9/11 age, where we're all conditioned to live in fear, that a film could be so powerful, intelligent and moving that it will challenge the accepted Bush-view of the world, and within two hours have audiences standing on their feet cheering acts of terrorism? Part political thriller, adventure, action-film and social commentary, "V for Vendetta" is a multi-textured, rousing and visually sumptuous film combining political allegory, bloody action and some of 2006's most stunning cinematic moments into a solid and thoroughly entertaining film that will be remembered long after all of this year's other blockbusters are forgotten.

The Bicycle Thief (Ladri Di Biciclette) (1948)
?
Cover Art
The Bicycle Thief is a genuine classic, not just because of its eminent place in cinema history as a cornerstone of the neo-realist movement, but also due to its honest, engrossing and often heartbreaking drama. It is the simple story of a man and his son on a journey to reclaim a bicycle essential to the livelihood of their family. Despite showing its age (it was made in 1948) the transfer holds up well and there is at least one indispensable extra. If you only buy one classic movie per year make this year's movie The Bicycle Thief.

Hustle & Flow (2005)
?
Cover Art
Produced by John Singleton with the help of MTV, and written and directed by Craig Brewer, Hustle and Flow is a critically acclaimed film that is definitely not your typical rags-to-riches showbiz story. Rather, Hustle and Flow is a quietly powerful film. Indeed, it's an expertly made, sensitive, low-key drama about hopes, dreams and regret that also manages to show us the value of human life, no matter how degrading the circumstances. It is no surprise that this film won the Sundance Film Festival's Audience Choice Award as Best Film. It's also no surprise that the film's star, the wonderful Terrence Howard, was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar.

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" is the latest Harry Potter film to be released on DVD. With another new director at the helm, "Goblet of Fire" is the darkest and most sophisticated film of the series so far. However, "Goblet of Fire" is also a very enjoyable film that reminds us that facing a fire-breathing dragon is nothing compared to the terrors of asking a girl out.
