Plot Synopsis

The Carry On gang are at it again in an apparently hilarious spoof of the Western genre. How these films were ever successful enough to keep spawning sequel after sequel is one of the great mysteries of our age, however the fact that that they brought us Sid James is justification enough for their existence. Here Sid plays the Rumpo Kid, the evil villain set to turn Stodge City on its ear until Marshal P. Knutt arrives on the scene to set him straight. The antics of the crew are nothing more than the expected double entendres, slapstick sequences and mistaken identity gags and they go through the motions like they all wished they'd been somewhere else.

Transfer Quality

Video

Carry on Cowboy is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.66:1, one of the early widescreen ratios adopted by the film industry. The transfer is not 16x9 enhanced.

The quality of the presentation is actually quite superb considering the age of the original material. The picture is sharp with good colour and hardly any noticeable grain. Shadow detail is a bit lacking, for example in the sequence from 73:36 to 74:12 where much of the image disappears into gloom. However, this is the only night scene in the film so it isn't much of a problem.

Artefacts and image glitches are surprisingly rare. There are some very minor spots and scratches such as those at 5:28 and 36:08 but most of the feature is clear of such damage and looks great.

Audio

Carry On Cowboy has an English Dolby Digital 2.0 mono soundtrack and so is as simple as they come.

The dialogue is clear and easy to understand with no noticeable sync problems and the music, what there is of it, is also fine.

Obviously, given the mono nature of the soundtrack, there is no surround nor subwoofer activity to speak of.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

The R1 and R4 versions of this DVD are identical.

Summary

Only for the completist, even Carry On fans would find it hard to sit through this one. However, the quality of the presentation is very good.
