Plot Synopsis

I am a bit of a sucker for blues rock and when I was growing up George Thorogood was a favourite of mine, amongst many others. His music is very simple but anyone who survives 30 years in the music business must be doing something well. His biggest successes were in the late 1970s and early 1980s but he is still recording and has recently released a 30 year retrospective album of his career. To go along with the release of the album comes this compilation of videos from EMI, which is being released at budget price.

You would be hard pressed to describe George Thorogood as innovative, however he does play straight ahead blues rock with a driving beat, which is fun to listen to especially in a relaxed party atmosphere.

The disc itself contains 6 tracks, four of which were hit singles. The last track is live rather than a music video. The tracks are:

  1. Bad to the Bone (4:55) - His first hit single from 1982's album of the same name. The video clip features him playing pool with Bo Diddley which is fitting considering how much his music owes to Bo Diddley's style.
  2. Nobody But Me (3:31) - A cheesy 1950s style clip with girls in leather jackets and swing skirts dancing around the band. An album track from the 1982 album, Bad to the Bone, which is a cover of the Isley Brothers original.
  3. I Drink Alone (4:37) - Another hit single although to my mind one of his weakest tracks accompanied by a rather uninteresting video, featuring George as a tough guy in a bar who unsurprisingly drinks alone. From his 1985 album, Maverick.
  4. If You Don't Start Drinkin' (I'm Gonna Leave) (4:02) - A better song about alcohol than the previous one with a video featuring all the elements you would expect in a George Thorogood clip, Booze, Birds & Bikes. A hit single from his 1991 album Boogie People.
  5. Get a Haircut (3:16) - Definitely the most interesting clip and one of his best singles. The video is animated and show the story of the character who needs to Get a Haircut. From his 1993 album, Haircut.
  6. Night Time (5:26) - A hard rocking live version of this song from his 1980 album More George Thorogood and the Destroyers. Recorded at the Seattle Bumbershoot festival in 1985.

There are probably a couple of his other big hits which could have been included such as You Talk Too Much and Born to be Bad that could have been added to this simple collection of music videos that would have been of interest to fans, but probably of limited interest to others. The cheap price offsets the quite short running time of 25 minutes.

Video

The video quality is good but nothing spectacular.

The clips are presented in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, non 16x9 enhanced, which is most likely the original aspect ratio.

The picture was reasonably clear and sharp throughout, with no evidence of low level noise. The shadow detail was fine. .

The colour was fine but a bit on the dull side. Most of the clips had a dark colour palette and one is black & white (I Drink Alone).

Artefacts were not very obvious with just a few specks and flecks and some light grain.

    There are no subtitles.

Audio

The audio quality is decent but unspectacular.

This DVD contains an English Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo soundtrack encoded at 224 Kb/s which is quite loud compared to other discs.

The music sounds fine, but there is not much separation of instruments. The clips sound very much like they would have when first shown on MTV.

The surround speakers added some mild atmosphere when played using Dolby Digital ProLogic II.

The subwoofer added bass to the music but this is a function of my amp's bass management rather than the DVD itself.

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

This disc is coded for all regions and is available in either PAL or NTSC depending on location.

Summary

A short set of video clips from George Thorogood and the Destroyers which give a decent run-down of his career.
