The Outer Limits: Sex & Science Fiction is a 2 disc set which offers six episodes from the new Outer Limits series which ran from 1995 - 2001 (the first series ran from 1963 to 1965). Much like the Twilight Zone series, the episodes are individual non-related stories. Although grouping several episodes into a sub-genre like Sex And Science Fiction is a novel idea, I would have much preferred the series to be released by season as per usual. However, the discs are not without merit and are a good way to pass the time.
Disc 1
1. "Caught in the Act" - A young woman becomes infected with an alien creature and finds herself with an uncontrollably need to mate. Unfortunately, she absorbs her more-than-willing partners. The episode stars Jason London and Alyssa Milano.
2. "Bits of Love" - In the year 2047 a man surviving a nuclear holocaust in an underground bunker creates a virtual reality simulator that becomes more than an obsession.
3. "Valerie 23" - A wheelchair bound scientist creates a synthetic skin for a company that tests it on an android "companion". This episode stars William Sadler.
4. "Last Supper" - When a mysterious ageless woman falls in love with a young man, she is reunited with his father, who rescued her from an inhuman experience twenty years earlier
Disc 2
5. "From Within" - People in a small town fall victim to parasitic worms which infect the brain and cause people to lose their inhibitions.
6. "The New Breed" - A scientist who's trying to find a way to repair damaged cells develops robots of microscopic size - with which a lab assistant secretly injects himself in hopes of curing his cancer.
The Outer Limits - Sex And Science Fiction is presented in 1.33:1 full frame as it was broadcast on television and it is not 16x9 enhanced.
Sharpness levels were strong with no signs of aliasing. Shadow detail was pleasing with strong black levels. There were no grain or low level noise problems.
Colours were natural and well defined. There were no bleeding issues detected.
There were little to no video artefacts apparent.

Overall |
The show has been given three audio tracks in Dolby Digital 2.0 surround. The tracks are in English, German and French.
Dialogue is always clear and there are no audio sync problems.
The show's music fits the episodes well and is not intrusive.
Surround channel usage is minimal. There are little in the way of directional sound effects. The show's music and character dialogue make up the majority of contributing elements to the rear channels.
The subwoofer adds minimal bass and is not needed in most cases.

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
The R4 version contains 3 episodes not contained on the R1 version, and vice-versa.
The episodes Human Operators, Skin Deep and Flower Child are absent from the R4 version and have been replaced with Last Supper, From Within and The New Breed.
The only reason the R4 gets the nod is the superior quality of a PAL transfer.
The Outer Limits is a reasonably solid Science Fiction series with several intelligent and thought-provoking concepts explored. This 2 disc set has 6 quality episodes presented with reasonable transfers. The extras have been skimped on unfortunately, but all in all this is a decent purchase.
