Plot Synopsis

Hi-5 Action Heroes is the new Hi-5 DVD. Like all previous Hi-5 releases it has plenty of stories, singing, and dancing that will keep kids happily entertained..

The team of Kathleen De Leon, Charli Robinson, Kellie Hoggart, Tim Harding and Nathan Foley return in this action and adventure themed instalment of this very popular children's series.

Action Heroes is focused on being adventurous and getting out there and having a go at things. There are a lot of outdoor, theme park shots of the cast members on roller coasters, having fun etc. As usual there is a great selection of catchy songs and stories that get kids involved.

Transfer Quality

Video

This is a decent video transfer for a kid's show.

This transfer is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. It is 16x9 enhanced.

The sharpness and shadow detail of the image are good..

As with all Hi-5 transfers, the image features plenty of bright primary colours. The flesh tones are look good.

As with some other Hi-5 transfers, MPEG artefacts are present, and occasionally the image suffers from macro-blocking issues.

English for the Hearing Impaired and song lyric subtitles are provided.

    This is a single-sided, single-layered disc.

Audio

There is only one audio option; English Dolby Digital 2.0 (320Kb/s).

The dialogue quality and audio sync are excellent, and the lyrics are always clear and easy to understand.

The music sounds great. They have consistently catchy tunes that kids really get into.

There is no surround sound or subwoofer activity (the show doesn't really need it).

Extras

The extras are on the light side - essentially they are short cuts to specific songs or stories in the main feature.

Menu

Like previous releases there were some distracting compression artefacts across all the menu pages. A colourful menu, but maybe a little tricky for kids to navigate.

Scene Selection

As with other Hi-5 DVD discs, the viewer is able to select their favourite presenter and watch one or all of their segments from the feature. A repeat function is also available so the kids can watch their favourite presenter until parents are driven crazy!. You can also skip straight to any of the different songs or the two stories. You can set these to repeat as well.

Karaoke

Three songs (Action Hero, T.E.A.M and Planet Disco) from the feature are available with karaoke functions.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

There is no R1 version yet.

Summary

Hi-5 Action Heroes is a good kids release that kids will enjoy for hours and hours.

The video quality is a bit disappointing with some MPEG problems. It probably looks better when broadcast on digital Channel 9.

    The audio quality is great.

    The extras are nothing special.
