Title of Show : Boohbah
Title of Disc : Big TV and more Boohbah Magic
Year of Production : 2003
Country of origin : UK
What's included? : 4 episodes.
Episode Length : 20 minutes each
Details of episodes :
Style of Production : Live action - main characters in full body suits.
Premise of show : According to the packaging - Join the Boohbahs, five magical atoms of power, light and fun as they travel in their Boohball around the world from child to child. Combining infectious magical movement and stories, the Boohbahs encourage creative thinking and movement. Anyway, back in this parallel universe, there are five coloured creatures who are large, round and furry called Boohbahs. Their heads pop up out of their bodies like some sort of strange telescope. The twenty minutes of each episode follows a very similar format; the Boohbahs arrive, dance to some music, some children arrive with a present which is passed through to a more realistic world called Storyworld. In this world, whatever was in the present brought by the children is found by a character (see episode details above) who then interacts with it. The story is narrated by a very monotonic narrator. The characters do not speak. Once the story is over, the Boohbahs dance again and the twenty minutes is up.
Age Group : Pre-school
Related to any other children's shows? : Developed by the same people who were responsible for the Teletubbies. If you thought that was weird, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Adult's view : This show really weirds me out. I find it very hard to watch but I can understand why the kids like it.
Child's view : It's like crack cocaine for pre-schoolers. It's addictive and they can't get enough of it. My three year old thinks it's fantastic. I put it to him that it was a bit weird, and his response was 'But it's nice'. It seems very soothing and certainly does get them moving.
Other Releases of this show available? : There are at least five volumes of this show now available locally.
Overall : Tough call. There's no reason not to let your kids watch it, but it's certainly not one of which you can share their enjoyment.
The video quality is very good.
The feature is presented in a 1.75:1 aspect ratio 16x9 enhanced which is probably the original aspect ratio.
The picture was very clear and sharp throughout, with no evidence of low level noise.
The colour was wonderful and rich throughout but I did notice some minor colour bleeding here and there.
There were no other noticeable artefacts.
There are no subtitles.
