I recently reviewed Six of the Best - New Zealand Vs Australia which was a very All Blacks focused DVD about the ten year history of the Tri-nations tournament. It focused on six games where New Zealand had great victories over Australia. Another disc which has been released at the same time is this one which is a more even-handed summation of the Tri-Nations tournament throughout its history.
For those who don't know, the Tri-Nations tournament is a yearly series of rugby union test matches between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa (generally 4 games per side, home and away). It was started in 1996 following the successful Rugby World Cup in South Africa. It has proven to be a very strongly contested and popular tournament with the viewing public.
Anyway, this show includes highlights of each of the ten tournaments played so far, approximately 10 minutes for each year. Most of the great tries and moments are included along with a few interviews both at games and between games. The program is divided into chapters for each year and are separately selectable from the menu.
This is an excellent souvenir of the first ten years of Tri-Nations and certainly includes some wonderful rugby. My only real criticism of this disc is that it doesn't really include any overall analysis and is really just a collection of highlights.
The video quality is average.
The feature is presented in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio, non 16x9 enhanced.
The picture was generally a bit on the soft side showing its video origin, with no evidence of low level noise. There was some light grain throughout.
The colour was decent but a bit dull and lifeless.
Artefacts included some minor tape tracking errors, bits and pieces of aliasing and some mild shimmering especially on camera pans. There was also some very occasional background macro-blocking.
There are no subtitles.
