Colin Lane (the Lano of the duo) and Frank Woodley's (he's the Woodley obviously) Good Bye tour of 2006 saw one of Australia's most popular and enduring comedy partnerships come to a fitting conclusion after more than 20 years. A 37 city tour saw the guys perform to more than 100,000 people right around the country, from the major capital cities to many smaller country venues.
This Good Bye DVD was recorded in Melbourne at the magnificent Her Majesty's Theatre during their record breaking run at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. The show was the highest selling season ever in the 21 year history of the Melbourne Comedy Festival. A pretty good effort in anyone's book.
The guys perform for the full 90 minutes with all the regular antics of a Lano and Woodley show on display. Amusing gags, many of them visual (and physical) plus heaps of banter and arguments between the two which is a trademark of their act.
This DVD is a must-have for fans of the duo who will sadly no longer grace the stage together. A shame - though I expect we will still see them performing individually on TV programmes such as Channel Ten's Thank God You're Here (a show where Frank Woodley's improvisational skills come to the fore).
The video is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and is 16x9 enhanced.
The level of detail is quite good, though perhaps a bit grainier than I was expecting and is best described as average to good without being spectacular. There are no examples of edge enhancement that I could detect, which is a bonus.
The colour palette is decent enough without any real problems to report.
There are unfortunately no subtitles available.
This is a dual layered disc, though I was unable to detect the layer change.

There are three audio soundtracks to choose from, with the main stand-up routine served by a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track. There is also a Dolby Digital commentary track plus a really neat third soundtrack that features the main soundtrack again but with the more serious swear words beeped out. This track is referred to as "the Soundtrack without the S and F words". This makes it kid and grandmother friendly.
The main Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo soundtrack handles all the dialogue really well. The track does the job expected of it and there are no audio sync issues.
There is no surround or subwoofer use at all.

An interesting commentary track as Lano and Woodley effectively talk over themselves performing the show. Quite a laugh at times, as they continue much of the banter and arguments you'll find in their stage performance. Worth a listen even though they do struggle for something constructive to say at times.
Colin (Lano) filmed a significant amount of footage while the boys were on the road in 2006 with his handheld video camera. Some of that material is included here. Runs for 18:35.
An interview recorded during the Goodbye tour, the boys discuss their careers and how much fun they have working together.
After the Melbourne show the boys stay on stage and take a few questions from the audience. They answer in typical Lano and Woodley style. Runs for 8:03.
A stack of photos showing the guys performing over the last 20 years.
Three short clips are included here, all recorded at the Melbourne Comedy Festival. Clips from 1992 (4:32), 1995 (4:03) and 2004 (5:56) feature.
NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
This disc is not available in Region 1.
Lano and Woodley - Goodbye is an amusing tribute to one of Australia's best comedy duos, as they tour the country for their farewell performance. The DVD package presented here is excellent with a lengthy show aided by a couple of soundtrack options plus a swag of bonus material.
