La Vérité si je mens! 2 is the acclaimed sequel of the 1997 surprise European box-office smash hit La Vérité si je mens. Both films are directed by Thomas Gilou, who most recently directed Michou d'Auber, starring Gérard Depardieu, Nathalie Baye and Mathieu Amalric.
La Vérité si je mens! 2 returns to the Jewish community of Sentier. The previous film focused on Eddie Vuibert (Richard Anconina) who was jobless and penniless but was given hope when he was mistaken for a Jew by Victor Benzakhem (Richard Bohringer), a wholesale fabric dealer. Introduced to this small community and taken under the wing of Victor, Eddie was offered a sales job and embraced his new surroundings despite living a lie. To add further complications Eddie had fallen for Victor’s daughter Sandra (Amira Casar).
The comedy of errors continues with La Vérité si je mens! 2 which follows Eddie’s playboy friends; Serge (José Garcia), a delivery man who pretends to be a millionaire in order to woo the affluent Chochana Boutboul (Elisa Tovati), Dov (Gad Elmaleh) whose wife leaves him after learning of his infidelity and in anger he hastily heads to California with Patrick (Gilbert Melki) and Yvan (Bruno Solo) who sticks with Eddie after a business deal with Eurodiscount, a chain of department stores goes horribly wrong. With the prospect of bankruptcy looming over Eddie’s head, the group will band together to turn their bad luck into fortune. The film also stars Enrico Macias and Daniel Prévost.
This is a well executed comedy – the lively dialogue is thick and fast and it features a wonderful performance by José Garcia, as the naïve and unlucky one in the group of friends.
While the PAL transfer is particularly good preserving the realistic cinematography of the film it is unfortunately not 16x9 enhanced.
Presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen, the transfer is relatively clean despite minor grain and is free of MPEG compression artefacts.
The consistent high encoding bit-rate of 7.25 Mbps over a Dual Layer DVD achieves an overall smooth transfer with excellent and realistic colour definition.
Black levels and shadow detail are also commendable.
The English subtitles are burnt onto the print of the film and are a good translation of the French slang dialogue.

The single audio soundtrack on the DVD is French Dolby Digital 2.0 which serves the film adequately as it is dialogue driven. Surround Sound usage is minimal.
There are no issues with the soundtrack as dialogue remains clear while the score is composed by Hervé Rakotofiringa and D.J. Abdel. The popular song Alabina by is a key track in the film.
