    Style of Production : Animation

Premise of show : The Powerpuff Girls are a very popular show on The Cartoon Network both here in Australia and in the US. The show is based around three girls of primary school age who have superpowers. They are sisters who were created by Professor Utonium from 'Sugar & Spice & all things nice' along with a dash of Chemical X. They are Blossom, Bubbles & Buttercup. They attend school like other little girls however they are also regularly called upon to save the world. Their main nemesis is Mojo Jojo, an evil chimpanzee who reappears regularly trying to take over the world. There are also many other baddies to fight. This show includes lots of humour and also action and excitement.

    Age Group : 4-10

Related to any other children's shows? : Not really

Adult's view : This is a fun show which the kids will enjoy but it doesn't offer a lot for adult viewing. Having said that it will not make you want to scream with pain either.

Child's view : My young boys love this show with its blend of action, humour and excitement. They love the three girls especially because they are so different. My youngest son is very attached to his Bubbles toy. It is equally enjoyable for boys and girls.

Other Releases of this show available? : There is also a movie which is a lot of fun and also releases of the Second Season and some discs with a few random episodes.

Overall : This set of 2 discs includes nearly 5 hours of episodes plus lots of extras. A good value purchase.

Transfer Quality

Video

    The video quality is reasonable.

The feature is presented in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio non 16x9 enhanced which is probably the original aspect ratio.

The picture was fairly soft throughout, with no evidence of low level noise. There was some mild macro-blocking to be seen from time to time

The colour was quite good without being spectacular.

Other than the blocking mentioned above there were no obvious artefacts.

    There are no subtitles.

Extras

Disc 2 includes all the extras.

Menu

The menu was simple allowing for episode selection and including some music.

Meat Fuzzy Lumpkin (7:32)

Another early short of the girls from 1995.

Another short from 1996 showing how the characters developed over time.

Cartoon Network promos for the show.

CNN Shorts Interview - Craig McCracken (1:24)

An intro by one of the creators for some shorts which are also included later as extras.

Space Ghost Coast to Coast World Premiere Toon In (15:48)

Space Ghost hosting a competition between five new cartoon shorts which will be judged by a panel of cartoon characters. A bit silly really.

Animatics of four early episodes which the earlier intro refers to.

Trailers

    Other Cartoon Network shows.

Stickers

A sheet of Cartoon Network stickers are also included.

Reversible Cover

You can everse the cover for a different picture of the girls and no OFLC ratings info.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

The region 1 version is pretty similar except for some extra languages (French, Spanish), subtitles and a different episode of Space Ghost instead of the one included here. May as well call it a draw unless you need subtitles.

Summary

5 (count them 5) hours of the Powerpuff.

    The video quality is reasonable.

    The audio quality is good.

Lots of extras are included which help show the genesis of the series.
