Celebrated comedian Danny Bhoy, returned to our shores earlier this year for an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand.
This Madman Laughs title captures one of his sell-out shows at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne. I managed to catch Danny Bhoy at one of his last shows, before his Australia/New Zealand tour officially ended in May.
At the time, Danny Bhoy had spent the past four months of 2009 travelling around Adelaide, Victoria, Brisbane and New Zealand and had much to tell his audience, in regards to international airports and racial profiling, crossing state borders and the “fruit police”, Motels and “small dinosaurs,” petrol stations and bathroom keys and many more 'bizarre' travel observations.
'Literally' many of these same routines appear in this filmed performance and while much of Danny Bhoy's comedy is derived from his experiences in Australia, as the show progresses, the comedy becomes more universal - centred on the challenges of trying to make positive ‘first impressions,’ particularly with 'potential mates.' Danny Bhoy's self-deprecating tales have become a trademark of his shows and here he recounts trying to make several positive first impressions with the opposite sex, as well as with his town's minister and The Queen herself - only to find himself looking the fool - well an endearing one at the least.
After seeing his show live, I can say Danny Bhoy really is quick-witted when dealing with hecklers, and in this recorded show, you can see exactly what I mean, as he always invites an audience member to suggest ‘the worst pick-up line’ he or she has ever heard. The responses are often always crude, yet Danny Bhoy always manages to work with the situation.
Also while Danny Bhoy is known to use profanity, he is never vulgar and his natural ability to swiftly move from one comic tangent to another is admirable.
Danny Bhoy has a natural, easygoing charm and this is an enjoyable show, particularly if you have enjoyed Danny Bhoy’s previous DVD - Live in Sydney.
This filmed performance is presented in 1.78:1 16x9 enhanced widescreen.
The comedy show is nicely filmed, capturing all of Danny Bhoy's physical comedy and a decent number of reaction shots from the crowd.
The set design of Danny Bhoy's stage is simple and effective - it is composed of coloured lights and a cityscape backdrop.
The picture remains sharp and defined, and the colour remains natural. The performance is presented on a single layer DVD and as the feature is relatively short, there are no issues regarding MPEG compression artefacts. There are no subtitle streams available.
