Plot Synopsis

The Wiggles need little in the way of introduction. The four lads (Greg, Jeff, Murray, and Anthony) in the coloured shirts have been entertaining the kiddies for over ten years now. This disc sees The Wiggles newest title Hoop-Dee-Doo It's a Wiggly Party released on DVD. In addition to the fellas, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus, Wags the Dog, and Captain Feathersword make appearances to provide some variety. There are sixteen songs performed on this disc, running for just over 53 minutes. The quality of the performance is up to the usual high standard that The Wiggles are renowned for and even the adults will find themselves bopping along to some of the songs.

As you all know, one of the advantages of DVD Video over VHS is  the ability to play a title many many times over with no degradation in the quality. What better type of title is there to demonstrate this durability than one that would be likely to see hundreds of repeat plays, not to mention the seldom used A-B repeat feature. Simply find out which songs the kids like the best and stick it on endless repeat. That should keep them happy for the whole afternoon!

Video

We have been presented with a pretty darn good video presentation with lots of bright saturated colours to keep the kids happy.

Full Screen 1.33:1 is the aspect ratio of this feature. It is not 16x9 enhanced.

The picture is always sharp and vibrant. Shadow detail is never stretched as things are always bright and vivid. There is no grain or low level noise.

Colours are very nice indeed. A palette made up of primary colours is prominent, with bright yellows, reds and blues and all shades in between evident. Saturation is consistent with no bleeding.

There were no MPEG artefacts or video artefacts noticed

There is a set of English for the Hearing Impaired subtitles available through the main menu that when switched on also activate the AusLan sign language feature. This appears as a small window in the top right hand corner of the screen, with a person signing the songs that The Wiggles sing. Quite a nice idea, though on a smaller screen this will be difficult to see.

This DVD is presented as a dual layered disc, one layer with the standard version of the show and the other layer with the AusLan signing embedded.

Audio

There is only one audio track present on this disc, being an English Dolby Digital 2.0 effort.

Dialogue is clear and concise at all times. There are some audio sync problems evident throughout. This would appear to be the fault of the source material. As with many music videos, the band appear to be lip syncing on occasions.

The music of The Wiggles is fun, upbeat, and very catchy. I still find myself humming Caveland!

There is no surround channel use and the subwoofer was also pretty silent.

Extras

Caveland Featurette

This is a really neat making-of featurette that explains in 5 year old speak how the animated video to the Caveland song was made. The animation process is summarised quite nicely. The finished animated song  is superb. Total running time is 4:55 minutes. Audio is provided by a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack.

Video Jukebox

Actually a scene selection option. Even though the main feature is not broken into chapters, this menu allows you to quickly navigate to the song that you want.

Photo Gallery

The photo gallery is a series of still images presented full screen that highlight some of The Wiggles live performances. Running for 1:48 minutes and complete with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack, that features the Caveland song as a background theme.

Weblink

A link to the official Wiggles website. Actually quite up-to-date showing touring information and other fun stuff.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

This title is not yet available in Region 1.

Summary

Another quality product from The Wiggles that will keep the little ones entertained for many, many hours. These guys have been doing this for a lot of years now and certainly know exactly what the kids want to entertain them.

The video is of excellent quality. The audio is very clear and concise with some syncing problems that can be forgiven. The extras are pretty light but this is the type of disc that you hit 'play' for the kids and leave them to it. For anyone with children under 5, this is highly recommend.
