The Corrs (Andrea, Sharon, Caroline and Jim) are an Irish singing group, but you knew that already didn't you? After all, they've been on the scene a few years now and I first came across them in 1995 when I rushed out and bought their self-titled CD. They have certainly supported their fans and lovers of our favourite little shiny discs by releasing no less than 7 DVDs, including one of the DVD Audio variety. This particular title is primarily a collection of their music videos with a couple of tracks from their The Corrs Unplugged DVD thrown in for good measure. The tracks presented on The Best Of The Corrs - The Videos spans the group's career thus far with a total of 18 numbers from all their CDs included.
1. Runaway 2. Forgiven,Not Forgotten 3. The Right Time 4. Love To Love You 5. Only When I Sleep 6. Never Loved You Anyway 7. What Can I Do 8. Dreams 9. So Young | 10. Runaway 11. Radio 12. Everybody Hurts 13. Breathless 14. Irresistable 15. Give Me A Reason 16. All The Love In The World 17. Would You Be Happier? 18. One Night |
There are several items to complain about with this DVD: considerable variation in sharpness, excessive aliasing and frequent edge enhancement mean that the video quality is a long way from the best that is possible from our shiny little discs.
As this is a collection of video clips from various sources, the aspect ratio varies from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1 depending on the clip you are watching. None of the video clips are 16x9 enhanced.
The sharpness is quite variable and ranges from perfectly sharp to soft. Even allowing for the obvious intentional effects in this area I found the overall sharpness a bit on the disappointing side. Shadow detail is good. There is frequent edge enhancement to be seen.
Generally, the colour is rich and full bodied and is a delight on which to feast your eyes as a full colour palette has been utilised. Note however that some clips or segments utilise black and white or effects that result in washed out or distorted colours.
MPEG artefacts are absent. No film artefacts were noted other than a couple of instances of what is intentionally introduced film grain. Moire is visible at 9:40 and 10:00. Aliasing is frequently visible.
No subtitles are provided on this disc.
This is an RSDL disc but I didn't spot any layer changes so I assume that the video clips are located on one layer with the extras on the other.

It's a pity that all the audio tracks on the disc weren't presented as Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes (or better yet dts mixes), rather than the linear PCM track that has been provided. It's at least some consolation that 6 tracks are presented twice, the second time with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. That said, there is really nothing else to complain about.
The only audio for the main programming is an English Linear PCM 2.0 48 kHz/16 bit (1536Kb/s) track.
While there was no dialogue, certainly The Corrs enunciation of all the song's lyrics left nothing wanting. The musical presentation, to my ears at least, appeared to be flawless with the quality of audio presentation being equivalent to that you would expect from a CD. There were no problems apparent with the audio sync.
Musically, The Corrs are accomplished performers, with their music quite naturally enough having a slightly Irish flavour, although this seems to be slowly diminishing with each CD they release.
As this disc provides stereo audio, the surrounds have no part to play.
As long as you use your audio system's bass management capability to redirect any bass audio to your subwoofer then you will definitely be rewarded with a sufficient, but not overpowering, level of thump.

There is a reasonable selection of extras included on this DVD, including 6 music videos featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Mind you, these are not additional videos but rather 6 that were also included on the disc with Linear PCM 2.0 audio.
The menu features animation and Dolby Digital 2.0 surround encoded audio. The aspect ratio is 1.33:1 and the menus are not 16x9 enhanced..
A nice little 8 page booklet which contains credits for each of the music videos and some background information on when and where they were shot. Also included is a discography.
The Image Gallery is a montage of photos of the group as well as tickets and backstage passes for various Corr's concerts. The aspect ratio is 1.33:1. Audio by way of the group's instrumental piece Erin Shore plays as the various photos are displayed. The audio is Linear PCM 2.0.
The discography provides 5 static pages, one for each of The Corrs Music DVDs and their In Blue DVD Audio disc. These pages are displayed in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and are not 16x9 enhanced. The audio is once again Erin Shore except that a different arrangement has been used and this time it is Dolby Digital 2.0 surround encoded.
NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
This title has been released in Region 1 although definitive information regarding its content is hard to come by. As far as I can determine, the content of the Region 1 disc is the same as ours.
The Best of The Corrs: The Videos is a nice collection of music videos and clips of various concert performances and spans the career of the group thus far.
The video quality is somewhat disappointing.
The audio quality is excellent although Dolby Digital 5.1 or dts encoding for all tracks would have been preferred.
The extras are satisfactory.
