Writer/Producer/Actor Ice Cube returns for the third instalment in the Friday franchise. Unfortunately, the franchise has declined in quality, as well as quantity (the runtime is only 80 minutes, whilst the previous two scraped in at the 90 minute mark). The first, Friday, was an original comedy based in black suburbia. The second, Next Friday, was an average follow-up, with a few laughs, but nothing special. Friday After Next is one of the least funny comedies I have ever seen, and I laugh at all the Police Academy films, even after the hundredth viewing.
It is very hard to be objective about a comedy that did not make me laugh once. It regurgitates a tired formula of fart jokes, slapstick humour, and boy chasing girl who is out of reach. It is so predictable that I could have fast forwarded through half the movie and still have known what was happening.
It is Christmas time, and an appropriately themed robber is going around the neighbourhood stealing presents. He stumbles across Craig (Cube) and Day-Day's (Mike Epps) apartment. After a struggle with Craig, the jolly thief escapes with not only presents, but also the overdue rent money. This leaves the pair to deal with the angry landlady, as well as her ex-con son, who threatens to teach the pair a lesson in prison life, soap and all.
Knowing they need to find the rent money or face possible eviction, the pair go to their first day at work as security guards at the local mall. Whilst the job involves sitting in a security cubicle for the day, what might at first sight appear to be an easy job is anything but. Chasing away loiterers, stopping illegal parking, and preventing theft from a pimp clothing store is their usual day. It is in this pimp store where Craig spots the love interest of the movie. She is of course taken by the store owner. Craig now must prove himself to steal the girl away.
It is not much of a spoiler to say that Craig gets the girl, gets the rent money back, and lives happily ever after (for another Friday that is).
One note - the cover sleeve indicates that this is an MA rated movie. While loading the disc, the movie states that it is only rated M. A bit of confusion there.
The movie is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. It is 16x9 enhanced.
There are no problems with the video at all. I still find it strange that some of the worst movies have the best transfers.
The image is very sharp. Shadow detail is of importance during the night scenes, and does not disappoint.
There are no film artefacts, aliasing, edge-enhancement or film grain.
There is only one subtitle track, which is English.
The disc is dual layered. The movie itself is small enough to fit on a single layer, so there is no layer change during the movie itself.

On offer on this DVD is an English Dolby Digital 5.1 track encoded at 448kbps, an English 2.0 channel encoded at 224kbps, and two English 2.0 channel audio commentaries at 192kbps. However, the back cover does not mention the additional presence of an English dts 5.1 track at 768kbps. I found this to be quite surprising, as it is a rare thing that such an important audio track is not described on the DVD's cover.
Dialogue is spot on, with no problems with sync or intelligibility.
There are no dropouts or hiss.
The surrounds are used mainly for the music. There is not much else that can be heard through the surrounds.
The subwoofer is also used for the music soundtrack. The R&B/Hip Hop music in the soundtrack uses the LFE very effectively, but is sometimes a bit overwhelming.
I would say the Dolby Digital track is the winner. The subwoofer is not as overpowering as in the dts track. While you would want more bass in your typical action flick, it is something that is not required here.

Not the most interesting of commentaries, the group explain the behind-the-scenes goings-on of the movie, which are all explained in the featurettes. Very few laughs.
This one I laughed out loud for. The cast are very comfortable with each other, and the jokes flow easily. Talking about their screen performances they poke fun at themselves in a nice way.
Based around several actors' stand-up careers. They are much funnier doing stand-up than they are in the movie.
Behind the scenes footage, along with interviews from the cast and crew. Concentrates more on the original and the first sequel.
Costume designers being interviewed, as well as showing us the inspiration for creating the fashions for each character.
Visiting several BBQ restaurants around the U.S., this is definitely not something to watch on an empty stomach, as it will make you very hungry. Based on the fact that there is a scene entering the kitchen of a BBQ restaurant in the movie, this feature veers away from the movie to show some of the best BBQ food you can get anywhere. Probably the most interesting viewing on the whole disc.
Facts about what other roles the actors had, where they were born, as well as other trivial information. At 14:00 a woman with large breasts walks by while the trivia track says "Many plastic surgeons have financing plans for breast enlargement surgery". Very useful information indeed.
A featurette based solely on this movie, with cast interviews.

All 9 deleted scenes are presented at the same video quality as the movie, being 1.85:1 16x9 enhanced. Audio is English Dolby Digital 5.1 at 448kbps (no dts), as well as an optional audio commentary at 224kbps. 16:06

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
The Region 1 DVD was released under the Infinifilm moniker. I do believe essentially all the features on that version are available on the Region 4 disc, the only noticeable difference being some DVD-ROM features included on the Region 1 DVD.
Personally I would take the PAL version for the superior PAL resolution. If you are after the DVD-ROM features, feel free to purchase internationally.
A great transfer and excellent audio accompany this below-par movie. Unfortunately, the Friday series has been going downhill, and hopefully this is the last attempt by Ice Cube to write a movie. Extra features are aplenty, yet only a small handful of them are worthy of viewing.
