Goldilocks and the Three Bears: A Modern Tale is a disappointing children's movie.
While this movie incorporates the original story of Goldilocks into one scene, it otherwise bears little resemblance to it.
Orphaned after her parents are killed in an accident, Goldilocks (Hanna Hall) is sent to live with her Uncle Hal (Dwier Brown) in the country. Meanwhile, Uncle Hal, an eco-friendly engineer, discovers that greedy developers plan to destroy the wilderness around his home by building a ski resort.
What follows is a fairly predicable, and extremely slow movie that my infant son walked out on, and left me to watch alone.
The transfer is akin to watching a VHS cassette through a dirty windscreen.
The transfer is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, Pan & Scan, non-16x9 enhanced.
The transfer is grainy throughout, and is very soft and frequently hazy (8:56, 10:43 and 20:01). Occasionally the picture becomes reasonably sharp in the foreground, but then the background dissolves into a blurry soup, for example at 7:21. The shadow detail is abysmal. Consider, for example, the inside of a car at 11:13, or when Goldilocks hides under her bed at 19:19. There is also low level noise, for example at 20:34, 46:08 and 48:47.
The colours are muted, and often appear washed out. Considering the subject matter, and target audience, I cannot imagine that this was intended.
Despite its relatively short length (and lack of content), the transfer appears heavily compressed, and subsequently suffers from a number of MPEG artefacts, including pixelization occurring throughout (1:58 and 26:01), frequent posterization (24:32), and occasional macro-blocking (9:05 and 56:24).
There is also aliasing on display whenever remotely possible, such as in a shot of some buildings at 3:01.
Film artefacts appear throughout, and examples can be seen at 8:24, 16:11, 25:16, 49:56, 58:07 and 78:23.
There are no subtitles on this single layered disc.

Overall |
The audio is considerably better than the video.
There is only one audio track, being English Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo surround.
The volume of the dialogue is poor, and buried within the audio mix. This movie features talking animals, but at times, it is the humans that have the worst audio sync. For example, at 5:52, 14:17 and 24:18, the movie resembles a Hong Kong action movie dubbed into English.
The musical score is credited to Gary Lionelli and is adequate.
Being a Dolby stereo surround track, the surround sound mix is quite front-heavy, but the rear speakers are used to help carry the score (for example at 3:56 and 23:32) and provide ambience, for example the river (21:21), the helicopter (65:34) and the crowd (76:39).
