Plot Synopsis

Bad Boy is a man-bashing road movie comedy on a reasonable DVD.

The messy, selfish and shallow Doug (Denis Leary), is a playboy and serial dater who never makes a commitment to a woman. At his grandmother's funeral, he meets the very neat, cheeky, and highly organised lawyer, Anna (Liz Hurley). Anna tells him that under the terms of his grandmother's will, Doug stands to inherit one million dollars, if he can get twelve of his past 'love interests' to say "I forgive you". The twelve women will be picked at random by Anna.

With the twelve women selected, off the two set to travel around California to track these women down. Obviously the plot  is partly an odd-couple comedy, and partly a road movie. The performances by the two leading actors are good, and while the comedy is not that funny, the movie does provide a few unexpected dramatic points. I would have preferred a few more laughs though, and I felt that the script needed a few more drafts, and a lot more humour.

Transfer Quality

Video

The image is a little grainy, but quite acceptable overall.

The transfer is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, 16x9 enhanced.

The image is a little soft throughout, and at times even became blurry, such as at 12:04. The shadow detail is generally poor, and an example of this can be seen with the exterior of the motel at 64:32.

The colour is good, and it is well saturated, with accurate flesh tones.

MPEG artefacts are not a problem, but the image appears slightly pixelated throughout. Occasionally there is a very slight posterization on some faces, such as at 46:27.

Film-to-video artefacts occur in the form of aliasing, such as on the gutter at 6:02, and on the car grille at 43:00.

Film artefacts appear throughout, and some very large examples can be seen at 6:43 and 13:59.

There are no subtitles provided on this DVD.

This is a single sided disc.

Audio

Apart from the English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, there is also an English Dolby Digital 2.0 surround-encoded track.

The dialogue quality and audio sync have no obvious problems.

The theme music is credited to Richard Gibbs, and the musical score is credited to Jason Frederick. The score features a driving rhythm which suits the film's road movie feel.

The surround presence and activity is subtle but effective. The rear speakers provide some ambience at appropriate moments, such as during the storm at 58:03.

The subwoofer is also utilised very subtly, mostly to augment the score, for example the drums at 26:37, or the club music at 54:21.

Extras

    There are few extras.

Menu

An animated menu, presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, 16x9 enhanced, with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio.

Theatrical Trailer (2:02)

Presented in an aspect ratio of 1.85:1, non-16x9 enhanced, with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

From what I can tell, Bad Boy has not been released on DVD in Region 1.

Summary

Only mildly entertaining, Bad Boy is a rather weak comedy for those who like man-bashing 'chick flicks' like the First Wives Club, where bitter women get their revenge on men.

    The video quality is reasonable.

    The audio quality is good.

The extras are really not worth mentioning.
