Plot Synopsis

Dave Mirra's Trick Tips Volume 1 is an instructional DVD demonstrating various introductory BMX skills.

Dave Mirra is one of the world's most recognized and accomplished BMX riders. During this feature, Dave Mirra explains and demonstrates various introductory BMX techniques. Helping to demonstrate these techniques are fellow riders Ryan Nyquist, Colin Winkelmann and Kip Williamson. The disc begins with tips for selecting a bike and then moves onto basic tricks and techniques for flatland riding. After covering these basics, the disc moves on to the pyramid jump, grind box, mini-ramp and the box jump.

This disc adequately demonstrates the basic techniques of BMX riding and would be valuable viewing for any beginning rider or person wanting to learn the basics of more advanced tricks. If you are looking for a basic introduction to BMX riding this disc would be worth taking a look at.

Transfer Quality

Video

The majority of the transfer is presented at an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 but two short scenes are presented at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The transfer is not 16x9 enhanced. Viewing the image, it appears that the original source material was shot with an intended aspect ratio of 1.33:1 and that this image has been matted to the 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Luckily, this re-framing of the image does not block any significant visual information but the original intended aspect ratio would have been preferred.

The transfer is acceptably sharp throughout but a number of scenes are notably softer. There are no problems with shadow detail during this brightly lit transfer. Some small amounts of low-level noise may be seen during the transfer with a clear example visible at 21:44.

The natural colour palette is always well saturated and is constantly accurately reproduced. During the slow motion replays of various tricks, the image is altered to display a purple tinted monochrome palette.

No MPEG artefacts were detected at any time during the transfer, but a number of aliasing artefacts may be seen during the transfer. Some examples of these artefacts may be seen at 6:55, 16:43, 19:36, 22:04, 34:29 and 34:52. These artefacts are slightly distracting.

As this feature was shot directly onto tape, no film artefacts are present during the transfer, but two analogue tape errors are visible at 4:26 and 44:32. Each of these artefacts only occurs for a very short period of time and are only minimally distracting.

At 6:41 and 19:02, the letterbox matting moves up and down over the image. These movements are quite small and only last for a single scene but this is moderately distracting.

No subtitles are provided on this disc.

Audio

A single English Dolby Digital 224 kbps 2.0 soundtrack is provided on this disc.

The dialogue is clear and easy to understand at all times.

No dropouts or problems with audio sync were detected at any time during the transfer.

A small amount of music is present. These musical selections work well with the action on-screen and never draw attention to themselves.

The surround and subwoofer channels are not utilized.

Extras

Menu

The non-animated menu is presented at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. This menu is presented in NTSC while the main feature is presented in PAL. As the mixing of video formats is strictly prohibited by the DVD specification, this potentially may cause problems with some DVD players.

The House that BMX Built (1:38)

This is a quick view of the exterior of a new house Dave is building. This extra is presented with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack at an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and it is not 16x9 enhanced.

The World According To Dave (3:21)

This is a short interview with Dave discussing how he was nearly killed after being hit by a car and how this changed his life. This extra is presented with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack at an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and an occasional scene at 1.33:1.

The Best Of Dave in Dorkin In York (7:02)

This is a clip from the Dorkin 10 video. This extra is presented with a muffled Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

DC Shoes Commercial (0:29)

This is a DC Shoes commercial showing Dave setting a world record with a 19-foot ramp jump. This extra is presented with a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack at an aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

R4 vs R1

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.

Both versions of this DVD appear to be identical and I therefore would have no preference for either version.

Summary

Dave Mirra's Trick Tips Volume 1 is an interesting disc that should prove to be useful for anyone wishing to begin BMX riding.

The video transfer is adequate for the material presented but it does show a number of minor artefacts.

The basic audio transfer is adequate for the instructional nature of the material presented.

The minimal extras included are a welcome addition to the disc.
