Coyote Ugly is a simple film that is set around a struggling songwriter and her work in a bar as a dancing barmaid.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Gone in 60 Seconds, Pearl Harbor) this film tells the story of Violet Stanford (Piper Perabo) a young songwriter who moves to New York to find fame and fortune. She quickly finds herself unemployed and desperate for money, forcing her to take a job working at a local bar - Coyote Ugly. While trying to break into the music industry, Violet meets Kevin O'Donnell (Adam Garcia), an Australian working at a local club. The two become romantically involved and Kevin helps Violet further her career.
Before watching Coyote Ugly I had been warned that it was terrible by numerous people, so when I sat down to review this disc I did not have high expectations. While this film is definitely not particularly memorable, it was not as bad as I had assumed it would be. If you are prepared to expect nothing from this movie and just sit back and let it happen you may actually enjoy the experience.
During this film there is obvious product placement for the Apple iBook laptop and while not as blatant as some placements in other films, this does seem a little forced.
The feature is presented in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and is 16x9 enhanced.
The transfer is consistently sharp throughout the feature providing excellent levels of detail. During the dark scenes, excellent levels of shadow detail are displayed allowing high amounts of detail to be resolved. At no stage during the transfer was any low level noise detected.
The colours presented on the transfer are vibrant and consistently natural looking.
At no stage during the transfer were any MPEG artefacts detected.
A small number of aliasing artefacts may be seen during the transfer but these are only very slightly distracting to viewers due to their short duration. Examples of these artefacts may be seen at 8:14, 9:45, 13:40 and 40:28.
A very small number of film artefacts may be seen during this transfer. The rare occurrence of these artefacts ensure that they are not disruptive to the viewer at any time. Some examples of these minor artefacts may be seen at 4:47, 5:20, 13:30 and 14:25.
Eight different sets of subtitles are included on this disc despite only six being listed on the packaging. The subtitles included are Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finish, Icelandic, Hebrew, English and English for the Hearing Impaired. I sampled both the English and the English for the Hearing Impaired sets and found them to be consistently accurate.
The layer change occurs at 69:03 at the start of Chapter 22. This point is at a scene change and while obvious is not particularly distracting to the viewer.

The dialogue is clear and easy to understand at all times.

Numerous musical number are present throughout the film during the bar dancing and Violet's song writing sequences. These musical selections suit the on screen action extremely well and include LeAnn Rimes hit 'Can't Fight The Moonlight'.
The surround channels are utilized throughout the transfer and create an enveloping soundstage. The subwoofer channel is used throughout to provide support for both music and effects.

NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
The Region 4 version of this disc misses out on;
The Region 1 version of this disc misses out on;
As this is a rental-only release at this stage, we cannot determine the specs of the sell-through R4 version but considering the quantity of extras provided on this disc I suspect that the same disc will be released for retail sale. If this is the case, my preference would be for the R1 version due to the inclusion of a DTS track.
Coyote Ugly is not particularly memorable but is not as bad as you may have heard and can be enjoyable if you initially expect nothing from it.
The video and audio transfer provided on this disc is of excellent quality but a higher bitrate Dolby Digital or DTS track would have been a nice addition.
The extensive collection of extras is quite interesting and provides some interesting insights into the making of the film.
