Roy "Chubby" Brown, the anorexic Middlesborough-born comic with the trademark leather pilot's helmet is back and at it again. Chubby is considered to be one of the original comedic larrikins that forged the way for other, "milder" mannered artists to follow.
In Stocking Filler, we are treated to an endless barrage of funny tunes, jokes and one liners in the true Chubby fashion. We are also treated to a song written by our own larrikin (Kevin Bloody Wilson) entitled "Where's Me !*#ing Bike".
As with all of Chubby's material you should not watch this or any of his other productions if you are easily offended, have a weak stomach or a sense of humour that differs from mine. Every major news topic of the day is commented upon in true Chubby fashion. A snippet of the subjects discussed in Stocking Filler are; The Queen, Jerusalem Wedding Accident, Tom Jones, Gary Glitter, Religion and female & male anatomy.
If you can handle the subject material then you will find this to be an enjoyable release and a good source of material for your next BBQ Party.
The transfer is presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and is 16x9 enhanced.
The transfer is extremely clear and extremely sharp and was a real pleasure to watch. Shadow detail was also excellent. There was no low level noise and not a hint of any problems due to the black background of the stage.
The colours were vibrant and bright. Chubby's trademark jacket made from patches of different materials was clear and well-defined and looked as if you were actually there. A beautiful example can be seen at 38:36 which shows the clarity of colour in his clothes and the deep black background.
There were very few MPEG artefacts to be seen. Aliasing is extremely rare and very mild when it does occur during the main feature. This particular artefact makes a full bodied appearance in the "Behind The Helmet" feature, though. Film artefacts were non existent which leads me to believe this feature was originated on video.
There are only English subtitles to choose from and they were close to the actual spoken word but not exact. At times, I needed to use the subtitles to pick up some of the words that I missed due to Chubby's accent. They also came in handy during some of the faster songs.
This disc is single sided and single layered, so therefore there is no layer change.

There is only the one English Dolby Digital 2.0 track to choose from but it has been surround encoded for added ambience.
The dialogue was clear and easy to understand at all times - it was the accent that I had trouble with a few times rather than the audio quality itself. Audio sync was not a problem at all with this transfer, and was completely spot on.
The surround channels were used by the soundtrack to provide extra ambience as the crowd cheered and applauded. It also gave a fuller feel to the music that Chubby played.
The subwoofer was not used by this soundtrack, but it was not missed.

This feature explain how Chubby got started in the comedy business and how he prepares his material before each show. A nice insight into the man and well worth watching.
The quality of this feature was nowhere near as good as the main feature. Chubby is sitting in front of a window which causes some problems for the camera. There is a large amount of sunlight beaming in through the window which causes the camera to offer less contrast on Chubby. At 2:13, the camera changes focus to the back of the room for a moment before it comes back to focus on Chubby's face again.
This feature includes English subtitles.
For the last 5 years, Chubby has used the band Hooper in his show as the opening act. This feature shows the band playing one of their songs with Chubby helping out on piano. This is the song used during the closing credits of the main feature. At 0:52, there is a brief audio dropout. This featurette offers Dolby Digital 2.0 surround encoded audio with no subtitles.
NOTE: To view non-R4 releases, your equipment needs to be multi-zone compatible and usually also NTSC compatible.
I was unable to find a Region 1 release of this disc. This disc is the same as the original Region 2 release.
Roy "Chubby" Brown-Stocking Filler is a good night's entertainment as long as those who watch it with you have an open mind and are not easily offended.
The video quality is superb.
While the only audio track is in Dolby Digital 2.0, the addition of surround encoding allows you to feel as if you are part of the crowd. Personally, I feel that a Dolby Digital 5.0 track would only offer a minimal improvement to this title's audio and is not something that would add enough value to be warranted.
The extras are great and it was good to see and hear in Chubby's own words how he got into the comedy arena.
On a separate matter, Chubby was recently diagnosed with throat cancer and is due for an operation to remove the lump soon. I am sure I speak for all your Aussie fans by saying good luck with the operation and we look forward to seeing you back on board as soon as you are well enough.
